Climate change effect on water resources in Varanasi district, India.
Water resources and availability have been affected by
climate change over the past years. This is due to climate change and the excess
use of energy and environmental resources. In this study, researchers analyzed
the effects that climate change has on water availability in Varanasi, India. They
were able to find that in a period of 60 years (1941-2000), climate change had
a highly negative effect on water resources. Researchers found that crop lands
were mainly affected by this rather that urban areas, where the effect was much
lower. Due to the population growth in Varanasi, India, water withdraws from the
main rivers have increased tremendously. In this study, water availability and
climate data were collected. Climate data was collected from seven meteorological
stations in Varanasi. Researchers stated
that Varanasi district experiences a high climate change in most of the territory
in the 1950’s and that the east and south areas were less affected. However, the
water scarcity was not during these years, it was in the 1980s were there was a
high impact in water resources in the east, north, and central parts. But the highest
impact was recorded in the south. Researchers did this experiment to assess the
climate change’s impact on water resources and availability in Varanasi, India.
The experiment data was achieved by evapotranspiration and calculating water availability.
Based on this study, climate changes can lead to the scarcity of water availability
and affect agricultural areas.
